Nepal is a country of diverse natural wonders and rich cultural and religious traditions. It is situated in the lap of the huge Himalayan mountain range surrounded by northern India and China. The magnificent mountains in the north, undulating slopes, high passes, swift-flowing crystal-like rivers, lakes and deep valleys, ensure that Nepal is a piece of heaven. There are three major regionsin Nepal, all of which are worth exploring: the mountains, the foot hills and the lowlands of the Terai region. Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital is known as the city of temples and it’scertainly worth a visit to Swayambu, (known as the monkey temple) and the Boudhanath Buddist Stupa, a World Heritage Site andone of the largest spherical stupas in the world.
The Nepal Himalaya has the highest mountains in the world and they are known world -wide for their stunning beauty. Nepal has 8 out of 14of the world’s highest peaks, Mount Everest being the highest at 8848 metres.Tourists and mountaineers from all over the world come to Nepal to trek in these monumental mountains, ( including Sagarmatha National Park, a World Heritage Site),and absorb the hospitality of the people, (including the Buddhist people, many of whom live at the higher levels),and their complex and colourful culture.
The foot hills of the Himalaya, up to 4000 metres in altitude, occupy most of the country. They provide rewarding treks and cultural experiences with stunning views, beautiful forest walking through Rhododendrons and Himalayan Cedars and grand river valleys. They are populated by small characterful villages, monasteries, farmers and herdsmen, some of whom provide lodges and tea houses for trekkers during the season in Spring and Autumn.
The tropical lowlands of Nepal, known as the Terai, are also popular with tourists. Visitors can experience the Chitwan National Park and World Heritage Site, the Bardiya National Park, the Shukla PhantaWildlife Reserve, the KoshiTappu Wildlife Reserve and others. These parks protect an amazing variety of wildlife including endangered species such as the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger, the One-horned Rhinoceros and Gangetic Dolphins along with rare species of birds and plants. The city of Lumbini, another World Heritage Site, is also an attraction in the lowlands, being known as the birthplace of Buddha.
Nepal has a rich and proud history which includes the birth to Gautam Buddha, the preacher of peace and founder of Buddhism, Prithivi Narayan Shah, the builder of modern unified Nepal, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first human to reach the summit of Mt.Everest with Sir Edmund Hilary, and the brave Gurkha soldiers who fought in the World War 2.
The Nepalese are spiritually rich, respecting freedom and democracy even though they are economically poor. They are cooperative and peace-loving, multi-lingual, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious. They practise unity amongst diversity and welcome tourists with respect.
